The Opticron BGA Series monoculars are some of the most highly specified monoculars available.
They are nitrogen filled, waterproof, have roof prism optics, fully multi-coated optics, fully internal focusing, have long eyerelief and twist-up, twist-down eyecups making them ideal for spectacle wearers. Having 42mm objective lenses produces a very bright, clear and sharp image, this 8x model has a particularly bright, sharp and clear image. The sizes are listed in the specification box, but it is roughly the size of the cardboard tube from the inside of a toilet roll (if anyone has a better object to compare it to, please email us!), this makes it very easy to carry. Having said that, it depends upon what sort of bird watcher you are; In the garden, from hides or if the birds are flying about then a 8x gives a better image than the 10x. If however you are going to be looking at birds at a distance then the 10x would bring them closer. |

If ordering online, we do not have the facility to automatically deduct the tax, this will be done manually before we ship the order. Shipping would be by Internationally Insured Airmail and normally takes about a week. |

Joe 20/01/2012 16:37:05 | I have The Opticron Marine II 7x50, dog-leg design, which gives a very clear image but is heavy (even split into two monoculars!). The DBA 8x42 appeals. Is there any long term deterioration in the prism coatings with roof prisms compared with Bak 4 prisms reducing image contrast? I have 30 year old Zeiss Dialyt 8x30s which are well looked after but I don t use them - the image contrast is really low compared with new optics. |

To be honest, we have no idea. We have never come across any problems and no one has reported any problems. The only comments I can make is that I compared a 10x42 we sold about 10 years ago, to a new 10x42 we had on our stand when we did a field day last year. The customer was interested to see if the new lens coatings made much of a difference. Neither of us could see any difference between the two - it was a bright sunny day and we were looking over a field, the new Oasis and S-coatings may have made more of a difference in different conditions. EDIT - Sorry I was getting my monoculars mixed up, it was a DBA one where we compared old and new. |

I am an airline pilot and would like a quality monocular for observing ground features from 35,000ft. There is minimal vibration from the flightdeck so would a 10X42 be more suitable than an 8X42? |

They both have a wide field of view which makes them easier to see through, even when there is a bit of shake. I would think that if used with the UTA to increase the magnification by 2.5x, it would be virtually impossible to use. |
Bletchley 12/05/2014 14:01:35 | Does the Opticron BGA 8x42 come with a strap or lanyard? I would be using this on a yacht in preference to a pair of binoculars, as I have very poor vision in one eye but excellent vision in the other. But at this price I would not want to drop it overboard! The opticron site mentions a soft case and strap, but it is not clear if the strap attaches to the monocular or to the soft case. This model is very significantly smaller and lighter than the Opticron marine monocular. |

The neck strap/lanyard attaches to the monocular itself, there is a lug on the monocular and the strap attaches with a small keyring type split ring. This monocular is a fraction of the size of the marine binoculars, it may not have quite as bright an image as a pair of 7x50 binoculars, but it is a lot easier to carry! |

A blower brush is ideal for removing dust and particles. The Opticron Microfibre cloth included is good for removing any finger prints or smudges. We stopped selling blower brushes when the Royal Mail started using size-based pricing. (£3-odd postage on a blower brush as it was classed as a small parcel) |

We are still in the EU, we have not even told the EU we are going to leave, and when we do it may be many years before we actually leave. We have always exported items to Canada and right across the globe, being in or out of the EU makes no difference, except while we are in the EU, items we sell to EU countries have to include VAT. We do not charge any shipping for monoculars to British Commonwealth countries or to the USA. |
